The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 9.0
AVG Anti-Virus is a comprehensive free software solution to keep your computer clean and protected at all times. When required, it may perform a complete scan of your system's folders, detecting all kind of unwanted files and threats, including spyware, adware, and, of course, viruses.
Its protecting Resident Shield will work in the background, keeping an eye on everything that attempts to install itself without your consent.
So what makes this 9.0 version worth upgrading? First, a better and faster scanning engine, with different levels of speed and accuracy to better fit your preferences. It claims to be up to 50% faster than previous versions, and this means that it will perform its task consuming 50% less resources. Another interesting improvement is its new anti-phishing detection techniques, allowing the program to detect potential phishing attacks coming from suspicious web sites faster and more accurately. This combines nicely with the new LinkScanner®, which checks every link of every page you intend to visit. Last but not least, this new version comes with anti-rootkit protection, thus being able to detect hidden threats no matter how well they try to hide.
This powerful anti-virus tool not only protects your computer from files already sitting in your drives or from those you download from the web, but also from threats coming through your mail or the Internet. The Resident Shield will warn you well in advance about those sites you want to connect to and which the program may find suspicious or clearly unsafe. With the above-mentioned LinkScanner® utility, you will know when a file may be harmful to your system well before you download it. The program also checks both your incoming and your outgoing e-mail messages.
The program allows you to customize the way it looks and works down to the finest detail. Not only the appearance and the program’s sounds can be changed, but also (and certainly more important) what and how will be scanned, how to act when a virus or another threat is found, what filters will the e-mail scanner used, and so on.
Though constantly working and alert (scanning every file you open and work with), AVG does not seem to affect your PC performance in a substantial way. While scanning your whole computer though, try to avoid performing other resource-consuming tasks simultaneously.
From this free version, you can easily upgrade to paid versions that will offer you even higher levels of security. Besides, its periodic updates will keep the virus database always current, and your system always protected against the newest threats.
